Bishop John T. McNicholas wrote a letter about Catholic education and the role of parents. He advised parents that the role of forming children is not reserved solely for the teachers but that parents are primarily responsible for the intellectual and moral development of their children and stated that foundation must begin in the home. He also strongly urged parents to send their high school aged daughters and sons to the Catholic schools in the diocese, stressing both the moral dangers in society and the importance of character formation and religious instruction offered by the Catholic schools.
September 1949
The Tamburitzans of Duquesne University held performances in Eveleth and Ely. The popular musical group featured more than 20 artists playing, singing, and dancing to the music of the tamburitza, a traditional instrument of Croatia, and was directed by Matt Gouze, a native of Ely. Also that year, Catholic schools across the diocese welcomed 4,930 students for the new school year.
September 1974
The diocese mourned the death of Father Casimir A. Cieslewicz. He passed away on the 51st anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. After spending a few months helping at various missions in the diocese and one year at St. Casimir in Cloquet, he spent the rest of his pastoral career at St. John, Virginia. The diocese also celebrated with 14 Benedictine sisters celebrating jubilees.
September 2014
St. James school celebrated its 100th anniversary with a centennial celebration Mass, open house, and picnic. Hundreds of people from all over the United States showed up for the event. Also, Camp Survive, held in August that year, had been one of the biggest yet, with 209 campers, 19 students on the prayer team, 39 junior counselors, and 40 adult staff.
