The people of Duluth were encouraged to give money to support the Community Fund. The Community Fund supported the 26 welfare, charitable, and philanthropic organizations of Duluth that provided social work throughout the city. Also, it was noted that the Cash Campaign, which had been carried out by the Cathedral in the previous months, did not accomplish its financial goals, but it was noted that many gave generously, and the campaign had been considered a success.
75 years ago – October 1949
The Rev. Patrick S. Flynn blessed the site and broke ground for the erection of St. Christopher Church in Nisswa. The parish had been established as a mission attached to Our Lady of Lourdes parish. St. Christopher, the patron of travelers, was selected as patron of the parish because most of the congregation was composed of tourists. Also, a papal blessing was bestowed on two diocesan groups active in the Diocese of Duluth. The blessing was given to the Duluth council Knights of Columbus in celebration of its golden jubilee and to the Duluth Council of Catholic Women on the occasion of the biennial meeting of the society.
50 years ago – October 1974
Father Joseph Cashen, a retired priest in the Duluth Diocese, was honored by the National Conference of Christians and Jews for his pioneering ecumenical work during World War II. He received the group’s Distinguished Merit Citation, a nationwide award, and was the first priest in the area to receive the award.
25 years ago – October 1999
The diocese celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Human Life and Development Fund, established by Bishop Robert Brom during the centennial celebration of the diocese in 1989. The endowment was nearing its million-dollar goal and was dedicated to helping the needy and protecting the sanctity of life. Benedictine Sister Kathleen Hofer was elected to a six-year term as prioress of St. Scholastica Monastery. Sister Hofer was installed in July 1999 and had been part of the Benedictine community for more than 40 years.

Two diocesan events were held to strengthen families with the goal of faith-filled marriages. A mini-retreat was held for newly married couples to help them build strong foundations and the first annual anniversary Mass and dinner was held for couples celebrating milestone anniversaries to celebrate marriage successes.
