Many have asked, “What brought you to Minnesota from Montana?” It’s a question that initially caught me off guard, as I was still trying to understand the answer myself. I knew we sold our house, resigned from our jobs, and landed in northern Minnesota two years ago. Part of the reason was to be near our grandchildren, but there was something else, a more profound calling. We had a plan – take a break, enjoy our grandkids, and catch our breath. But as I have learned, God’s plan has a way of surprising us sometimes.
My husband and I graduated from high school in our community, surrounded by family, friends, and mountains. I worked in an idyllic rural public school district nestled in a valley at the base of the Rocky Mountains. For nearly 20 years, I served in various roles, including teacher, mentor, instructional coach, and principal with superintendent duties. I planned to stay there until retirement and thought I would only leave the area in a casket. I remember being so surprised when God gave me the desire to go and provided an emotional release from the community we loved.
As we settled into life in Minnesota, we caught our breath, and I quickly became lonely. I began to pray for wisdom to know where God would use me. Indeed, there was a purpose to this plan. When the opportunity came to teach kindergarten at Marquette, God gently nudged me and opened the door to experience Catholic education for the first time. I had no idea that he would once again open the door for me to work with teachers, students, and families as a principal.
As I embark on this new chapter as the principal of Marquette Catholic School, I often find myself reflecting on how I arrived at this position. In those moments, I am reminded of the words, “Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand” (Proverbs 19:21). I am in awe of his ways, which are better than mine, and I am reassured that he has a purpose for me and Marquette School. His plan, which always prevails, fills me with inspiration and confidence as we begin another chapter at Marquette Catholic School.
With the steadfast support of our parish and school community, we are ready to begin the 109th year of Catholic education on the Iron Range. Thanks to the dedication and support of our staff and volunteers, all grades have been relocated to our new building on Chestnut Street in Virginia. We are continually inspired by God’s guidance and provision as we embark on another century of Catholic education.
Marquette Catholic School serves students in grades PreK-8. We have a unique four-day school week, Monday through Thursday, and offer both before-care and after-care for students. Two preschool sections have options for two-, three-, or four-day enrollments. We have developed a four-year middle school program (5-8), including daily faith formation, human formation in our house system, project-based learning, physical education, band, choir, and art. All programs are taught by faithful and dedicated teachers.
As we renew our MNSAA accreditation this year, we are deeply grateful for the support of our parish and school community. Their input is invaluable in making our school stronger and healthier. We eagerly anticipate discovering how God’s plan will unfold for our school and how he will use each of us.
