I would like to share with you these thoughts from our Cathedral rector and vicar general, Father Seth Gogolin. Believe me, when it comes to kicking off our Ministries Appeal, I could not have said it better.
I’ve noticed that there have been a number of “celebrity conversions” to the Catholic faith recently. These individuals seem to be getting a lot of attention from Catholics online (both positive and negative). How should we respond to these new (and well-known) brothers and sisters?
Three years ago, on May 20, 2021, Bishop Daniel Felton was ordained the tenth bishop of the Diocese of Duluth at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary, inviting the faithful on the eve of his ordination to grab the wings of the Holy Spirit seeking divine inspiration for the church’s mission in our time.
I can’t say I’ve watched much Bill Maher over the years, except for clips of his show I see on the Internet, which is often enough. But the atheist comedian and TV personality, broadly a person of the political left, has made a career out of political incorrectness, of saying the unexpected and provocative and uncomfortable.
We all know the story of Moses and the burning bush. Moses, out in the Sinai Desert, sees a burning bush that is not being consumed and approaches to take a closer look, when God speaks from the bush telling him that he is to lead his people out of captivity and into the Promised Land.
I was denied the true meaning of the Eucharist until my late thirties. It is possible I had not been listening during my first 30 years of life, and it is also possible that my catechetical formation could have been much better during those three decades.
The three-year Eucharistic Revival called for by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops may be in the home stretch, but it’s going out with a host of major events, making history for the Diocese of Duluth.
n Duluth Bishop Daniel Felton’s 2022 pastoral letter, “The Dawn from on High Shall Break Upon Us,” the bishop charted the next step for the Duluth Diocese in carrying out its evangelizing mission. Among the more immediate tasks for implementing the pastoral letter was establishment of pastoral regions that the bishop called “mission fields,” describing them as “a designated geographical region for which we are accountable for introducing our Vision, Mission and Values.”
If you’ve ever called or written to the Pastoral Center, looking to reach the bishop, chances are it’s passed through one set of hands on its way to him — Rose Eichmueller’s. Eichmueller has served as administrative assistant to the Office of Bishop for the Diocese of Duluth for the past 34 years.
The Gospel for Easter Sunday is from St. John’s account of Easter morning (John 20:1–9). We are told that Mary Magdalene arrives at the tomb very early in the morning while it is still dark. She has come to anoint the body of the Lord, which had been buried in haste because of the onset of the Passover.
Last year, I wrote about the importance of us all being present for Catholic schools in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic: the value of students and teachers being present in the classroom, parents being present in our school, our students and community members being present for each other, and, perhaps most importantly of all, our being present in our churches.
